Winter Storage Tips

The way you store your Geringhoff corn head this winter is the way you’ll find it in the spring. Proper storage protects your investment and ensures you get the same reliable performance season after season.

At Geringhoff, we want you to continue getting the most out of your Geringhoff head — every harvest, every acre, every year. That's why we've put together a simple Winter Storage Checklist to help you prep, and protect, your head for storage.

Click on a topic below to jump to that section.

Winter Storage Checklist

Winter Storage Checklist for All Corn Heads

  • Remove all debris that is hanging below the head
  • Clean your head of all debris
    • This can be done either with air or with water
    • If you are using water, make sure to run the head for at least 15 minutes after washing to dry out any moisture
  • On model year 2011 and prior heads make sure to clean out the valve area
  • On model year 2012 and newer heads that are folding or equipped with an ICF Sweeper, remove the center cover over the hydraulic block
  • Remove the driveline shield between the crown gearbox and miter gearbox
  • Remove all the gathering chains
    • We recommend soaking the gathering chains in oil over the winter
    • It is best to have 2 containers – put the R/H sides in one container and the L/H sides in another container
    • Note: When installing the chains before harvest, put the R/H chains on the L/H side and the L/H chains on the R/H side - this will wear the pins on the opposite side for longer life
      • This can be done on any Geringhoff head except the Freedom - these have specific R/H & L/H chains
  • Remove the auger chain drive cover
    • Lube the auger drive chain or you can remove it and soak it with the gathering chains
  • Remove all chain guides and deck plates
    • Completely clean the deck plates and the area under the chain guides
    • Reinstall once clean and dry
  • Grease the head completely
    • Remove the PTO shafts, clean and grease the profiles and the cross and bearings
    • For folding heads make sure to grease the folding pins and all the folding drive couplers
